i have finally gathered my composure

No longer hyperventilating over the new Hawaii 5-0!  So sure, now seems like a good of a time as any to post my thoughts.  Spoilers ahead, obviously, but at this point you should be caught up.  It’s Thursday people, get your shit together.

• I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START.
• So let’s start at the beginning: Chin lookin’ fiiiiine in a police uniform.  And also, I just want to state (if I haven’t already), that I was totally team!Chin for going back to HPD and he stated to Danny exactly my reasoning - he could help Steve better within the department than just running around without help.  Yeah, it sucks and I can see why Danny got pissed, but really, there was no betrayal and I think Danny got irritated for no reason.  I think what drove me crazy was some of the fan reaction to it and it reminded me of why I don’t get too heavily involved with fandom in the first place (have I alienated everybody who is reading this yet?  whoops)
• Oh Kono, so sad on your surfboard and yet you still look flawless.
• McGarrett in prison.  I have so many ~feelings on the subject, 99% of them being completely shallow.  The scruff, the orange jumpsuit, the pushups (hilarious); all of it was awesome.
• Danny & McGarrett’s conjugal visit via their eyes was a magical thing to witness.
• I like the new additions of Joe and Max are pleasant enough.  Max is already adorable and Joe filling in for some of McGarrett’s daddy issues?  I’m definitely on board with that (although I hope Danny still calls him out on that because I don’t know, but that’s one of my favorite things).
• Kono turning into even more of Steve’s protege; I hope this progresses throughout the season.  I had a lot of high hopes for season 1, but I think with the fact that the new governor is basically benching Kono from 5-0 for a little bit, it’ll make her a little more reckless, a little more willing to take risks, and who better to learn than from her crazy SEAL boss PLUS the man who trained her crazy SEAL boss?  EVERYBODY WINS (except Danny, who gets a headache anytime Kono unnecessarily pulls her gun)
• What else can I say about the Danny and Steve scene in the car?  That unicorns barfed rainbows at the amazingness of it?  If you look at the screen caps (and I have), there’s Steve with his ridiculous long lashes (honestly O’Lough, what part of you isn’t illegal at this point) and then Danny who kept sneaking looks back at him and then also yelling at him to get down so Steve would be safe and, I mean.  WHAT EVEN, SHOW.  How do you come up with ways to give us all heart attacks every week?
• Siobhan put up this little parallels photoset to compare a part of the pilot with 2x01, but I think my favorite parallel was in the pilot of Danny and Steve first riding in the car and Danny reveals the whole “Danno loves you” for the first time…flash forward to 2x01, and Danny’s talking to Grace, saying “Danno loves you” - there’s just something about that where I die a little each time thinking about it.  I need to better articulate my thoughts on this, but yes.  A whole world of yes.
• I liked the way the Rachel pregnancy storyline was wrapped up.  I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I thought that was really sloppy writing to just kind of tack that on the season 1 finale, so I’m glad it’s pretty much come to a close.  Or maybe, we’ll see how it gets dealt with, but I’m not trying to get concerned about it anymore.
• The twist at the end?  Liked it.  Never got 100% on board with Jenna (they pretty much gave her no personality), but now that she possibly turned on 5-0 (or is a double agent? who knows), I find her at least 35% more interesting.
• Gah, I don’t know what else to say!  Except that is it Monday yet?
• (also, how does this post have 100+ notes?  this fandom is the best, seriously)

so this H50 recap should have happened before now

I completely missed doing last week’s and I’ve been trying to write MY FEELINGS for this week’s for days.  But I’m at work now, on my lunch break and I have 40 minutes left, so - LET’S DO THIS. 

• I LOVE EVERYONE ON THIS ISLAND.
• The boyfriend action was out of control.  Obviously, we knew it was going to be epic based on that teaser clip of Danny being out of breath, but oh man.  OH MAN.  The hospital visits and Uncle Steve.  UNCLE STEVE GUYS, IT HAPPENED AND THEY CAN’T TAKE IT BACK.  Also, I just remembered that in episode 3 (with the football game) when Grace met everyone, Chin introduced himself as Uncle Chin (while pointing to his chin, lol) and Steve introduced himself as just Steve.  So clearly, both Grace and Steve feel comfortable/familial around each other now *flappy hands*
• CBS, now that you have dangled the prospect of Steve babysitting Grace, YOU NEED TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN.  That’s the one thing about the episode that I’m bummed about, tbh.  (can’t we just forget about the procedural stuff and make this a show about cops who work together but deal with humor and drama ala a show like Parenthood?  I guess it’s ours to dream about.  le sigh)
• Grace and Danny, Monkey and Danno.  I cannot wait to watch Grace grow up and see how their dynamic changes and shifts  - I mean, Grace will always be his little girl, but I just need to see Danny interrogate Grace’s boyfriends and have them argue about cell phone bills and her curfew and watch Grace get really exasperated with her dad even though all he’s trying to do is protect her.  I NEED THESE THINGS.
• Guys, what is more Hawaiian than Spongebob?  Also, can someone make something where Danny is Spongebob (THEY BOTH WEAR TIES), Steve is Patrick (they’re both always shirtless), Kono is Sandy (both are kickass) and Chin is Mr. Krabs (because he has ridiculous tendencies toward money).  How was that so easy to crossover, what even.
• CHIN.  I’m glad that the HPD isn’t let Chin getting carried away with his epic manpain issues and hopefully by moving on from this story, we can move on to Chin and Malia moving into each other’s lives again.  After such heavy storylines for Chin, I think we all need to see him lighten up a bit.
• Jenna - I don’t understand the Jenna hate (or when anybody in fandom hates on the ladies; haters, please be moving to the left.  this is an h50 ladies appreciation blog always).  I’m not super sold on her character yet, but she had a few great moments and I’m warming up to her.  I kind of wish she does stick around just because it was great to see Kono interacting with another lady and watching them be badass together.  If Jenna’s around for second season, great.  If not, well it was adorable to see Alex Mack on my tv again.
• Oh the Rachel situation - well that just came out of nowhere, didn’t it?  BFF and I have a theory that whatever they have going started after Matt left (i mean, that would be the most logical, right?), but I want more information.  Are they just hanging out?  Have they been cheating on Stan?  Does Stan have something else on the side?  What happened with Rachel and Stan?  And really, what happened between Rachel and Danny that they’re willing to give it another go?  MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS, SHOW.  I like Rachel a lot, but with the way the show is set up, we hardly know anything about her and her and Danny together so to have them be all lovey dovey at the end is confusing, more than anything.
• But moving on to something not confusing - THE HUG.  THE HUG.  AND THEN THE WHIPPING OUT OF GUNS, BUT MOSTLY THE HUG WHERE THEY ARE TOTALLY BOYFRIENDS AND STEVE WANTS TO SIDEBAR AND CLOSE HIS EYES WHILE HE HOLDS DANNY AND EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING IS OKAY AND PINEAPPLES AGAIN.
• Also “one near death experience” - hi, did you guys forget like three weeks ago when Steve was nearly catapulted off a cliff?  Ugh, the hurt/comfort levels for this show is off the charts.
• I love this show so much it hurts :D

ugh, thanks Danny for reminding me that I want to write that fic where Grace was 16 and she starts up a relationship with her friend Mikey (? the kid she mentions in the tsunami episode) and it was all going to be angsty and pineapple-y and UGH I JUST WANT TO SIT AROUND ALL DAY AND PLAY IN FANDOM.

I mean, this is the man who drives around with grenades.  The man who threw someone in a shark tank.  The man who raised a tree trunk using his bare hands, took that trunk and knocked somebody out with it, and then revived him USING A BRANCH.  So clearly, Steve’s got the reckless part down, but is he going to be reckless by trying to pursue Wo Fat?  Reckless in avenging whatever landed Danny in the hospital? (I’m thinking a giant yes to both of those questions).

Everything will be pineapples and everything will hurt in the best way possible.  I’m hoping that this episode will be like the beautiful baby of everything that was awesome about the hiking date episode combined with the amazing angst that came from the Matt episode.  HOW WILL WE SURVIVE RACHEL, HOW.  WILL WE.  SURVIVE.

It was hella awkward to watch, Buckley was unprepared, they ran short of questions, etc. Scott had some interesting answers but also some lovable-douche moments. Overall I enjoyed Scott, but the whole ~event left a lot to be desired.

Listened to the audio of it. Agree with before reblogger about it being unprepared and running short. Buckley was also hella hyper and annoying, I think it really turned Scott off (Turned me off anyway).

Thanks guys!  I think I’m gonna avoid it.  Michael Buckley can get kind of irritating to me, so it’s better if I just avoid the whole thing all together.

• i am HELLA exhausted and my laptop is making loud noises, so I’ll have to keep this brief until I can write up a more in depth post tomorrow
• but the most important things we can take from this episode:
• Danny is still learning to surf.  And I learned that I love it when people call him Jersey.
• The clothing choices were A+ this episode.  Kono’s adorable bikinis, Steve’s gray shirt/green cargo pants combo (MY FAVORITE COMBO/FAVORITE CARGO PANTS), and Chin working that black suit.  I mean…hot damn.
• So CBS is withholding carguments from us.  Look at you CBS, GETTING OFF.
• Danny’s sick voice is nothing short of amazing.
• and the most important thing:
• IS IT NEXT WEEK YET.
• HOLY CRAP.
• LEARNING THAT WE GET TWO WEEKS IN A ROW OF EPS
• IT’S LIKE CHRISTMAS.
• BUT NEXT WEEK.  I NEED IT TO BE NEXT WEEK RIGHT NOW.

I’M ANSWERING ALLLL THE CHARACTERS :D  

Chin

• How I FEEEEEL about this character: I feel like his nickname should just be The Onion because he has so many layers (ba dum ba tsch).  But personally, I don’t have too many strong feelings one way or another about Chin because I feel like he’s so underused on the show.  I mean, his backstory and problems with HPD/family have been great, but I often feel like he gets the shaft in favor of either a procedural storyline or something going on with the other characters.  And I think 90% of the problem with that is that this is only the first season and the show has juggled a lot within 24 episodes, but hopefully, we’ll see his character grow more and more next season.  And also how I feel about Chin?  BAMF.  
• All the people I ship romantically with this character: I think Malia has potential, if they would bring her back.  I find their story really interesting and want to know more about it.  But for the most part, I don’t really ship Chin with anyone (even though one time, I read a Steve/Chin fic and it was actually pretty fantastic).
• My non-romantic OTP with this character: um, everybody with Chin?  Like, I love how they treat Chin within the dynamics of the group.  Benevolent mentor/family member to Kono, fellow cop/comrade with Danny, and just Friend to Steve.  In season 2, I need more shades of these dynamics because they are all just fantastic.
• My unpopular opinion about this character: none that I can think of.
• One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: More time with Malia!  More Kelly/Kalakaua family dynamics!  Maybe once the HPD/money situation storyline gets cleared up, we’ll get a Chin that’s not so angsty and I would appreciate that, even though DDK can bring the manpain.

Kono

• How I FEEEEEEL about this character: Oh Kono.  I have a habit of yelling BAMF! any time she does anything awesome on screen (so like, all the time).  Like Chin, I feel like we don’t know too much of her backstory, but with Kono it’s kind of warranted because she’s the rookie and she’s fresh and learning and I loooove that because we get to see how each of the three guys mentor her and then we see how she totally blows them all out of the water.  Kono for all the BAMF awards.  BAMF runs in the Kelly/Kalakaua family, obvs.
• All the people I ship romantically with this character: Danny/Kono, third episode.  I don’t care if it happens or not, but they’re one of my top ships for the show.  Also, I not so secretly ship Steve/Kono, but I would NEVER want that to happen on the show.  Their Master/Grasshopper relationship brings me so much joy and I like the idea of them as a crackship than actual canon.  And man, Kono needs a better love interest than Ben Bass - what a bore! (although it did continue on with her thing for blondes, ergo Danny, which made me pleased).
• My non-romantic OTP for this character: Kono and Mary’s friendship would have been so epic you guys.  SO EPIC.  I’m legitimately mad at the show for taking that away from us.  The margaritas they could’ve shared, the torturing of the 5-0 men that could’ve happened.  I will never get over this, unless they give it to us later in the series.  Make it happen universe.
• My unpopular opinion about this character: I suck at this question, I don’t have an answer for her either.
• One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: A better love interest than Ben Bass.  More Steve/Kono interactions that would make Danny want to punch walls and recite the Miranda rights at both of them.  I guess that’s what fic is for, right?

Steve

• How I FEEEEEEEEL about this character: WHAT DON’T I FEEL IS PROBABLY A BETTER QUESTION.  When the show first started, I was a hardcore fan of Danny’s; not that I didn’t like Steve, I just didn’t see the appeal at first.  But in rewatching those first couple of episodes, I caught things that Steve/AO’L did that were hilarious or heartbreaking and slowly, slowly I fell in love with one Steve McGarrett and jesus christ, do I love what they’ve done with character.  Sure he can be kind of cheesy at times, but the good character driven stuff that the writers/AO’L have done for Steve?  FLAWLESS.  I’m kind of constantly surprised by how much I adore Steve.
• All the people I ship romantically with this character: Oh Steve, you are like the fandom’s bicycle (both the character and Alex O’Loughlin, for that matter).  First and foremost, Danny.  Like…duh.  And then Steve/Catherine because Catherine Rollins is bad ass and if this show would stop being so procedural, I feel like we would see a lot more of her.  But mostly Steve/Danny, for all the OTP awards, ever.
• My non-romantic OTP for this character: I think I’ve exhausted every relationship everybody in previous characters, but a couple I haven’t mentioned: Steve/Jenna, because let’s face it, Jenna is Steve without the scary Rambo/SEAL training.  And also, Steve/Grace because Steve is better with children the more he hangs around Grace (remember when he was awkward with kids at first?  I sort of kind of wish they had stuck to that because it was hilarious) and let’s face it, every time Steve is around Grace or kids in general, ovaries go boom.  IT’S JUST SCIENCE.
• My unpopular opinion of this character: I HATE THIS QUESTION.
• One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: Obviously, I wish he’d never sent Mary away.  And I wish Daddy McGarrett had never died, but that’s so integral to Steve’s characterization, I don’t really wish for that all that often.  I wish for more Steve/Grace interaction, particularly on a level where Danny has to tell him to act like a human being and not like a Super SEAL.  I wish for more Steve/Catherine interaction - and not even on a “hey let’s jump into bed again” kind of situation but more like…how they are outside the bedroom (or maybe there isn’t more outside of that…hmmm).  Basically, my wish for the show is less procedural, more character for every single one of these characters, but we’ll see how season 2 unfolds, I guess.  It might be a vain wish, but it’s my wish.
